TRW-Lucas – disc brake pads that pack a punch

Maximum safety, durability and performance, even under the most extreme conditions – we naturally have very high expectations for brake pads. To meet these in the best possible way, disc brake pads from TRW-Lucas are based on a great deal of know-how.

Modern brake systems are more powerful than ever before. All individual components are important and they have to interact safely and reliably. The disc brake pads deserve a special level of attention, not only as wearing parts, but also because they should be precisely adapted to the motorbike and the type of use.

Small parts, great performance
Disc brake pads have to meet a variety of requirements today:
• constant responsiveness, exact bite point and precise control across a wide range of temperature, contact pressure and speed
• high temperature resistance and optimum heat conductivity
• excellent comfort properties such as direct response and low lever pressure
• high mechanical strength and low compressibility
• long service life with lowest possible wear of the brake disc
• extremely low noise emission and vibrations
• maximum safety and consistently high quality

How important these different product properties are depends on the area of use of the brake pads. Mechanical strength and service life are the top priority for off-road motorcycles, for example. And a brake pad for a maxi scooter will have different requirements than one for an enduro or a supersport bike.
To ensure that each brake pad can serve its purpose in the best possible way, TRW-Lucas has designed pad materials with different compounds which are applied to the backing plates of the brake pads in two different manufacturing processes.

TRW-Lucas sintered metal brake pads – top performance
The high material strength of full metal brake pads allows optimised braking performance. Precisely adapted mixtures of powdered metals are used for the pad material. During the sintering process, this powder mixture is compacted under heat and then processed into compact pellets. These pellets are then irreversibly bonded to the backing plates with a special soldering material using high temperatures and pressure.
TRW-Lucas offers a wide range of sintered metal brake pads with perfect braking performance. The types TRW-Lucas SV/SH - Sinter Street, SRM - Sinter Scooter and SI - Sinter Offroad have TUV type approval. Racing fans can also choose between RSI - Sinter Offroad, SRQ - Sinter Track and the SCR sinter carbon pad, though this should only be considered by professional riders.

NRS – extra safety for organic and hyper carbon brake pads from TRW-Lucas
Almost all brake pads used to contain asbestos. This achieved high material strength and very good adhesion of the pad material to the adhesive and the backing plate. Today, brake pad materials are based on compounds containing rubber and synthetic resin, fillers, reinforcing fibres, lubricants and binding agents as well as up to 10 % metal. The individually tailored material combinations give the brake pads the friction and comfort properties required in each case. Since asbestos was banned, the pad material places very high requirements on the bonding of the pads. This adhesive can become brittle under extreme conditions, such as excessively high temperatures or a very long service life. Water can get in between the pad material and the backing plate, causing corrosion.

TRW-Lucas, as a rule, therefore uses no adhesives, instead applying the patented NRS system.
This achieves a highly stable bond between the organic pad material and the backing plate. During manufacturing using the NRS technology, the steel backing plates are equipped with dozens of small profile barbs in the area where the pad compound will later be applied. These barbs are positioned in opposite directions. The optimum size, direction and position on the backing plate are adapted precisely to the pad material.

This special barb profile is then irreversibly anchored into the pad material under high pressure, without any adhesive or other bonding agent. A permanent mechanical bond is created between the backing plate and the friction material. This rules out loss of the pad material, even under extreme thermal conditions such as during mountain pass descents or in racing.

All organic brake pads from TRW-Lucas (Allround, EC, RQ) and the CRQ - Hyper Carbon racing pads are manufactured with the NRSTM process.
